By reading this page, you're living in the past — which is fine; I'm a sentimentalist myself. But here's the latest at derekbaker.com.

Brought to you by God®

I can't even pretend to be keeping up with this site, even on a monthly basis, so in all likelihood, there's no one going to read this post, because why would you return to a site that only gets updated maybe six times a year (which seems to be my current rate). I'm tempted to bag this set up, at least, and just go with a Blogger-run site that I can log in to, post something snarky, and forget about it, rather than mess with all the fussy HTML, CSS, RSS ABCs that can be fun when you're daydreaming, but just another chore when you don't have time. And I don't have the time.

But I just saw the following press release (this is true, although it reads like an Onion parody) in connection with yesterday's "National Day of Prayer." This, in fact, is directly from the National Day of Prayer Web site, but I repeat the release here in its entirety because it's just too good to pass up.

Kenny Wallace to Drive National Day of Prayer Car Sponsored by Furniture Row in CUP at Talladega

Denver, CO- NEXTEL CUP Driver Kenny Wallace is scheduled to drive the National Day of Prayer car #78 sponsored by Furniture Row for the NASCAR NEXTEL CUP race at Talladega Superspeedway. The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America when the Continental Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer in 1775. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

In commemoration of the day, which falls on Thursday, May 4th, the #78 Furniture Row Chevy Monte Carlo CUP car will feature a new red, white and blue paint scheme, created by Sam Bass Design, showcasing the National Day of Prayer logo for Talladega on April 30. Click here for a full-page image of the car.

Based in Denver, Furniture Row Racing® is the NEXTEL Series' newest team, formed and sponsored by Furniture Row® Companies. However, if you go to the Furniture Row Racing site, you see an update on the race that starts with this information:

After promising practice runs last week at Talladega Motor Speedway, the Furniture Row #78 CUP program, sporting the National Day of Prayer paint scheme, was looking forward to qualifying and racing. Unfortunately, They were left wind blown at Dega, and didn't make the qualifying cut.

Psalm 46, verse 10 says: "Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth." Which would seem to contradict a red-white-and-blue "National Day of Prayer race car" in amusing ways (it doesn't, you'll notice, say: "Kick it on the short track, and know that I am God") and in some more serious ways (as in, trying to use God to exalt a particular nation). Discuss.
